When Partnership Meets Purpose: Working with Mitsui to Protect the First 1,000 Days

At Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM), we believe every child deserves a healthy start in life. In West Java—where stunting is still a serious challenge—that means doing more than offering quick solutions. It takes patience, consistency, and a long-term commitment.

Preventing stunting isn’t just about one intervention. It’s about supporting families every step of the way. Alongside improving maternal nutrition, we focus on raising awareness about proper complementary feeding and supporting breastfeeding mothers with the guidance and resources they truly need.

This year is extra special for us—it marks our fourth year partnering with PT Mitsui Indonesia. Since 2022, Mitsui has been standing side by side with YUM, helping protect the first 1,000 days of life for families in Cipanas. We’re also grateful for the support of PT ABC Kogen Dairy, a Mitsui-affiliated company, which has contributed milk and yogurt for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

Mitsui’s Vital Contribution to Our Mission

The support from PT Mitsui Indonesia has been the backbone of this program. Thanks to their commitment, YUM has been able to go beyond basic aid and build a strong, holistic support system for mothers and children:

• Essential Health Support
  Mitsui’s contribution made it possible to distribute monthly nutritious food packages—rich in protein, folic acid, and iron—along with free hemoglobin (Hb) testing kits and iron supplements to more than 350 pregnant women.
• Strengthening Local Health Workers
  Their support also helped train around 100 community health workers (kader) across 20 Posyandu, equipping them with essential knowledge about maternal, infant, and toddler health.
• Building Healthy Habits for Life
  To make sure the impact lasts, education is at the heart of the program. We distributed special recipe books for complementary feeding and held monthly cooking classes. Around 80 breastfeeding mothers learned how to prepare nutritious meals using simple, local ingredients.
• Sustaining Long-Term Impact
  Together with Mitsui, YUM continues to monitor and evaluate health outcomes in 15 Posyandu we previously supported. The results are encouraging—newborn babies in these areas continue to show low rates of stunting.

YUM works closely with teams from PT Mitsui Indonesia and PT ABC Kogen Dairy through monthly online meetings. In these sessions, we share progress, celebrate achievements, and openly discuss challenges. We’re truly thankful for partners who don’t just support, but also want to learn, listen, and grow with us.
