About Us
Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM) - Foundation for Noble Work is a not-for-profit organisation that works to improve the quality of life of the poor and destitute in Indonesia.
For more than 35 years YUM has been operating projects that have assisted people across the country regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, age or gender. Today YUM operates a range of Health, Education and Community Development projects in the Indonesian regions of Java, Central Kalimantan and Aceh.
YUM is focused on working in an inclusive manner that ensures local communities are heavily involved in the development and operation of all projects.
History
In the late 1960's, three foreigners began working together to assist the poor and destitute in Jakarta. Wilbert Verheyen, Sister Rina Ruigrok and Ibrohim Wessels initially established a mobile medical clinic and later a small hospital that serviced the poorest Jakarta residents.
Each of these three social workers was a member of Subud and it was with the support of this organisation that Yayasan Usaha Mulia (YUM) was born in 1975.
Bapak Muhammad Subuh officially established YUM as a legal foundation in 1976 with the goal of providing medical care, social and educational instruction and occupational rehabilitation to the poor and destitute in Indonesia.
YUM continued on the work of Mr. Wilbert, Sister Rina and Mr Ibrohim through a range of health projects, but also expanded into education and rehabilitation programs for orphans and destitute children.
This included the development of the Children's Village in Cipanas that still operates successfully today.
At the organisation's peak in the 1980's and early 1990's, YUM was providing services to up to 50,000 people every year.
As the result of the Asian economic crisis in the late 1990's and a range of other contributing factors, YUM experienced a period of time where a number of projects stagnated and the number of people benefiting from the organisation's projects decreased significantly.
In 2005 a new Board took over management of YUM with the ambition of achieving sustainability, of improving the quality of the organisation's projects and ultimately of providing assistance to more of the poor and destitute in Indonesia.
As part of this process, YUM merged with the Indonesian Relief and Development Network (IRDN) in 2006. IRDN had been operating health and community development projects in Java and Central Kalimantan for close to 10 years and merging the two organisation's under the YUM banner allowed for a combination of resources and expertise.
With an increased focus on the Central Kalimantan region, YUM opened a new office outside of Palangkaraya in March 2008.
Today, the YUM vision remains on track with what Bpk. Muhammad Subuh aimed to achieve when the organisation was first established - To improve the quality of life for the poor in Indonesia.

What is YUM?
We are a registered charitable organization in Indonesia and have been actively engaged in helping the poor and destitute in Indonesia for over 30 years.
Where do we work?
We have projects being carried out in three provinces of Indonesia: Kalimantan, Aceh and West Java.
What work do we do?
We provide ongoing support in three areas: health, education and community development. Some of our key projects include a child sponsorship program, an orphanage, malaria control, teachers training, vocational skills training & community libraries.
With whom are we affiliated?
We are a member of Susila Dharma International, who hold consultative status with the UN Economic & Social Council (ECOSOC) & UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), and work closely with their affiliate chapter in Indonesia . Some members of our staff are also members of the Jakarta chapter of The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
How do we select our beneficiaries?
YUM always conducts baseline research and cooperates with local governments and leaders when developing a project and identifying potential beneficiaries. YUM makes every effort to keep up to date with best practice in our areas of interests to best serve those in need.
How are the benefits of YUM's projects sustained?
We empower the local communities with needed skills and knowledge to enhance their self-reliance & independence in the future. We also work closely with local partner organizations and government bodies to ensure our projects meet the communities' needs in an appropriate way.
How do I know the money really gets used properly?
We are audited each year by a professional accounting firm. Annual reports and bi-annual newsletters are prepared and available on-line. We also welcome any visitors to our projects and are happy to provide further information upon request.
What giving programs does YUM have?
There are three giving programs that many donors find rewarding to participate in:
- Child Sponsorship supports disadvantaged children to access the education they need to break out of poverty.
- Orphanage Sponsorship supports the care and education of a child living at our orphanage.
- Corporate sponsorship program recognizes the generous support of our major donors.
How can I donate?
You can make a general donation to YUM's work or specify a particular project you would like to support, including child sponsorship.
YUM accepts donations in the following ways:
